I read this today from Allen Jackson what a great point. John 4:23-24 (NIV®)“A time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” Our five senses are amazing, aren’t they? They are gifts from God, and without any of them, our world would be diminished. We tend to evaluate our worship based on those things, too—a pretty room for our eyes, a soft chair to sit on, music that pleases our ears, and perhaps a cup of hot coffee to please our taste buds. Some congregations and faith traditions use incense and candles to evoke a spirit of worship. Yet, Jesus said true worship, the kind of worship the Father seeks, is through our spirit—and that is beyond the scope of our senses. I’m not opposed to a comfortable worship environment—I enjoy that, too. But these things are cultural preferences that have little to do with the authenticity of our worship. Let’s ask the Holy Spirit to show us His perspective on true worship—and then, let’s apply that to our own hearts. THINK ABOUT ITHow do you define worship? How does it define you?
