1 Thessalonians 5:3 – 5 (CSB)

“For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. 4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. 5 You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness.”

“Sons of Light”

Many false prophets of old forecast a bright future although God had said judgement was forthcoming Paul says we will see the same thing come about in future days. “labor pains” signify the suddenness and the painfulness of the day.

“But you” Paul now goes to those who have been raptured with the church, He says they will not be in darkness and be on earth (to them) to see the terrible things that are brought about prior to the return of Jesus.

Believers will have no part in the “day of the Lord” since they are now in heaven, they are the church John writes about in Revelation. Jesus taught to believe in Him would remove a person from spiritual darkness. Paul brings this out all the way through verse seven.

Believers will not experience the wrath of God but those in unbelief, rejection. Moral darkness, spiritual darkness will experience severe wrath from God. All of those in darkness (those following Satan) will be overtaken in the day of the Lord with deadly results.

“Sons of Light” are referenced as believers or children of God. Believers will live a completely different life than those in disbelief at the day of the Lord.

God Bless.

I came to Asbury in June 2020 right after COVID and enjoy being in this great church. We have several things going on that can be seen on our website @ asburyumcfoley.org. We invite you to attend our service at 2704 South Highway W in Foley, MO. I am confident you will be blessed.
