Colossians 3:8  (CSB)

“Give Sin No Place”

“But now, put away all the following: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and filthy language from your mouth.”

We talk and write a great deal about certain sins and sometimes miss others either by accident or possibly intent. It is easy to overlook some things but Paul would not let us do that.

This word “put away” is taken from the Greek word meaning taking of clothes. It is like a worker who returns home at night and removes his or her dirty clothes and discards them. These dirty garments represent our past sinful lives.

“Anger’ can become a deep smoldering issue in our life if we do not deal with it. It can lead us to bitterness and develop an attitude toward other people. Ultimately if not checked it could lead to a deeper sin issue if action is taken because of the anger.

“Wrath” is an outburst of anger that comes suddenly and erupts into and could lead to hatred of  another. Wrath is nothing more than extreme anger that is developed and not checked before it becomes a more serious issue in one’s life.

“Malice” refers to evil speech and denotes moral evil while “slander” in its simplest form is blasphemy. To slander a person who is God’s creation is to blaspheme God who is their creator. James said the tongue is powerful force that can bless God  and with it we can curse people (James 3:9).

What can be said about “filthy words?” Let me say I believe certain words are curse words however others may think they are completely acceptable. I do believe that when Jesus changes a person’s life He can change their language. We all know people who cannot speak a six work sentence with one or two curse words (as I define them). I also believe this can also include those off color jokes that we hear.

God Bless.
