Colossians 3:5 – 8 (CSB)
“Slay the Sin”
“Therefore, put to death what belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desire, and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, God’s wrath is coming upon the disobedient, 7 and you once walked in these things when you were living in them. 8 But now, put away all the following: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and filthy language from your mouth.”
“Put to death” refers to a conscious effort to kill the remaining sin in one’s life. “Immorality” refers to any form of sexual sin and goes beyond any sexual act to the thoughts of a person. One of the leading things that destroy men and marriages is pornography and Paul address it correctly here – it should be put to death.
“Lust and evil desire” are two additional sins Paul mentions “lust” (or some translations use “passion”) is the physical side of this sin while evil desire’ is the mental side.
He says God’s wrath is coming to those who practice these. However, God will punish the disobedient because He cannot look upon sin. That is very reason we will not be perfect till we see Him face to face. However, that does not mean we can continue in what Paul has outlined here. “Put to death” simple means it must be killed in a person’s life.
We all walked in sin till God forgave us through the shed blood of Jesus, He says “you once walked and lived in them” seems to indicate they are now free from that bondage. Once freed we must remain free. He then goes on to add some additional things that need to “put away.”
Tomorrow we are taking an in depth look at verse eight.
God Bless.
