Colossians 1:26 – 29 (ESV)
“New Members Into the Household of Faith”
“The mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints. 27 To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. 28 Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. 29 For this I toil, striving with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.”
Paul is telling us this “new mystery” is the new activity of God in Christ in creating new people into full membership into the family of God. Jesus has opened to gates to allow more than just Jews into the fellowship. You remember it was the Jews that rejected Jesus earlier.
Paul’s overriding concern was for the Colossians – namely their maturity as Chrsit Followers. That maturity involves discerning for wisdom (found only in Christ) and then living truth consistently until the end. The idea of becoming “mature” in this passage has to do with completeness and realized potential. Many believer find Jesus and that is all they desire “let’s just get to heaven.” While that is important we me must consider what our true potential as believers is while we live here.
Two words Paul uses that an athlete would understand. One is found in verse twenty-nine “struggling”. People are at various stages in their spiritual experience.
God Bless.
